Snapshot: Laura Marling

Listen in Spotify.

A couple of days ago, I mentioned in passing , the young English singer-songwriter who was, until recently, a member of Noah and the Whale. Having now listened to her debut solo album, Alas I Cannot Swim (February 2008, Virgin Records), my admiration for her is reinforced. More so, when you consider that she’s the same age I am. The album is a well-produced collection of slightly dark indie/folk-lite. I never thought I’d find myself nodding along to a lyric like “Cross your fingers, hold your toes / you’re all gonna die when the building blows”, but it’s difficult not to, when it’s delivered so sweetly. The album’s sophisticated songwriting, coupled with the fantastic union of Marling’s lovely voice and sparse instrumentation, makes it a pleasure to listen to.
