Emma-Lee Moss is one of the rising stars of London’s anti-folk scene. That’s perhaps a vague compliment, given the complete ambiguity as to who that scene actually consists of, but I mean it well. Performing under the stage name Emmy the Great, the 28-year old singer-songwriter has played support slots for a fairly impressive list of international talent, from Martha Wainwright to Get Cape. Moss offers shy, folk-tinged acoustic music, with songwriting that alternates between the heartbreaking and the tongue-in-cheek.
There’s one thought about Emmy that I just can’t shake: at times, she sounds uncannily like Isobel Campbell, of Belle & Sebastian fame. Their voices share the same gentle sweetness. And it is a sweet voice; the kind that can make even the cruelest lyric somehow endearing.
After a scattering of live and demo EPs and a long series of small-venue shows, Emmy’s debut full-length, First Love, is due for release in the New Year. If the first single, “We Almost Had a Baby” (enjoyably sardonic/nostalgic indie-pop) is anything to go by, I think it might prove to be one of 2009′s musical highlights. For now, her cover of Ash’s “Burn Baby Burn” is definitely worth a listen.
