El-Paso’s favourite prog-rock outfit The Mars Volta have confirmed a release date for their fifth studio album, Octahedron:
The Mars Volta’s fifth studio album, Octahedron, will be released June 23rd by Warner Bros. Records in North America, and on June 22nd on Mercury Records in the rest of the world.
The first single in North America will be “Since We’ve Been Wrong”, while overseas it will be “Cotopaxi”.
Octahedron was written by The Mars Volta: Omar Rodriguez Lopez (music, arrangements, direction) and Cedric Bixler Zavala (vocals, lyrics), and performed by The Mars Volta Group: Marcel Rodriguez Lopez, Thomas Pridgen, John Frusciante, Isaiah Ikey Owens, Juan Alderete de la Pena, Cedric Bixler Zavala and Omar Rodriguez Lopez.
I find the omission of saxophonist Adrián Terrazas-González interesting (is he no longer within the ‘group’?), and the inclusion of John Frusciante is exciting – it would appear that he is a fully-fledged member of this band now, in a studio context, at least.
The album’s track listing is as follows:
1. “Since We’ve Been Wrong”
2. “Teflon”
3. “Halo of Nembutals”
4. “With Twilight as My Guide”
5. “Cotopaxi”
6. “Desperate Graves”
7. “Copernicus”
8. “Luciforms”

John anthony MOTHER FUCKING Frusciante!!
Oh yeah baby.
Octahedron? Hmm… can’t say I’m convinced with the name but if this is anything like TBIG (or even better – Deloused or Frances) I’m not complaining
I think TBiG is their weakest album to date, actually. I hope this is a return to form.
Deloused In The Comatorium is my personal favourite. I know what ye mean about TBiG Lindsay, its just lacking a little something. Plus there’s something about the quality of Cedric’s voice on that record that I find weird.
However, the news the John Frusciante is considered part of the group worries me a little. Just fuels my fears that John might leave the Chili Peppers.
Dude! I know exactly what you mean about Cedric’s voice on TBiG. It has this strange nasal-trying-too-hard quality.
Reminded me of that My Chemical Romance fella actually, Gerard Way, at points. Thats fine for MCR but not for Mars Volta.
