Alright, might as well cut right to the chase on this one; you need this album.
In a scene often dominated by bands who appear to care more about hype and haircuts than making good music, Gallows are not so much a breath of fresh air as they are the first gasp of oxygen as your head finally leaves the water you’ve been held under.
The music itself emerges slowly from a watery, murky noise then kicks you in the face, pins you against the wall and doesn’t let up until upcoming single “The Vulture (Acts I and II)” which begins with what you’d expect is about the closest to a ballad that Gallows would create. This first section of the song is soft, tender, but still dark and malevolent, something which is amplified along with a great deal of vitriol when the song’s second act enters to rip your fucking face off again.
This record is dark and powerful, a hardcore punk masterpiece, but still something you’ll want to sing, shout, scream, whatever, along with, especially on “I Dread the Night” with its chorus “And I want to be anyone in the world but me, trapped in the body of a man defeated, I am the same old mistakes repeated.” You might not think you could feel positive singing that line, but with Gallows, you can. You’ll also feel like you can do just about anything, and a record that can do that is a powerful thing.
So I recommend this album to you in the same way I recommended Gallow’s live shows; do yourself a fucking favour and go buy Grey Britain.
