Snapshot: Slow Club

What’s the first band from Sheffield you can think of? If you’re an NME reader, you probably thought of The Arctic Monkeys. If you were born in the ’80s, Pulp are probably the name that springs to mind. Alternatively, if you’re one of the fringe’d teenage masses, you might have gone for Bring Me The Horizon. The point I’m trying to make is that Sheffield has for years had one of the most vibrant and varied music scenes in the country, but that in keeping with its industrial history, it has never been known for its acoustic acts.

Charles Watson and Rebecca Taylor, known collectively as Slow Club, are out to change that reputation, with their sweet brand of folk-pop. The band, who released their debut album Yeah So in July via Moshi Moshi Records, combine sweet vocal harmonies with simple acoustic guitars and thoughtful songwriting. Taylor’s voice is beautifully melodic, and works superbly when contrasted against Watson’s half-spoken vocals. Holiday love-song “Christmas TV” is heartbreaking in its honesty (‘it’s okay that I pray / that you will miss your flight / and have to stay with me another night’), while the gospel-like chorus of “Let’s Fall Back In Love” is gently anthemic.

Slow Club have a sweetness to their sound that makes them truly wonderful to listen to. If you haven’t already, it’s time to join the Club.
