Dave Hughes and the Renegade Folk Punk Band – “Sinners and Saints”

I wanted to like this album. I really really did. Political folk-punk that cites Springsteen, The Clash, Mischief Brew and Green Day as influences; given my well-established hope of marrying Frank Turner, on paper it sounds perfect. Unfortunately, it just… isn’t.

Which is putting it lightly.

To put it heavily, I’ve heard better singing in the street at pub kicking-out time. Dave Hughes sounds like Bob Dylan, if Bob Dylan was ripped to the tits on mescaline and suffering from particularly troublesome adenoids. In fact, Sinners And Saints made me genuinely wince on a number of occasions, particularly upon hearing what I can only describe as harmonica abuse.

It’s not all bad, however. At least, not to the point of being unlistenable. The instrumentals are well executed and the song-writing is solid enough for the most part. It just all falls to pieces when Hughes exercises his larynx. That said, I wouldn’t begrudge the man seeking a second opinion. But for my money this album is best avoided, depending on your tolerance for such burning political insights as, “I want something / That’s better than this / But I’m not sure exactly what it is / But I think that we can build it / If we all try together / If we all sing / Do-doo-doo,” from “I Want Something”, a six-minute cover song that feels about seven minutes too long.

It is at least free, so if you choose to give it a listen, at most you’ve lost 21 and a half minutes of your life. And possibly a small part of your soul.
