Haunted Stereo – ‘On A Pin/Lock The Doors’

Haunted Stereo

So, you’re an experimental, alt-folk six-piece, with an understandably eclectic sound and a range of instruments at your creative disposal. It’s time to release a single. Ideally, you want that single release to showcase both the dark and lighter sides of your musical personality. Luckily for my preamble, that is exactly what Haunted Stereo have done with double A-side single On A Pin/Lock The Doors.

On A Pin is a lively, piano-led piece of playful folkiness, led towards quite a beautiful crescendo by some glorious strings and contrasting well with the darker, almost sinister atmosphere of Lock The Doors. Beginning much more slowly with a near-malevolent violin sound, the song weaves between this and a more up-tempo, yet still menacing piano-driven section. It really shows off this Southampton sextet’s ability to make experimental, yet enticing music.

Overall, this single presents the listener with songs which are an interesting and exciting listen whilst still being enjoyable; creative and experimental without being obtuse. It hints at much more for a band which is just screaming out for a “they’ll be haunting your stereos soon” pun, but I’m just not going to do it. I’m not.
