According to vocalist Roddy Woomble, Scottish indie veterans Idlewild will enter a hiatus following their current tour. In an entry posted to the band’s official Facebook page, Woomble broke the news whilst discussing the band’s recent gig at The Forum, London:
Decided to let the audience know that it will be our last London show, which makes the remainder of the concert quite poignant. At the end of this final part of the tour we will have played forty gigs around the UK and Ireland in support of Post Electric Blues, which seems more than enough for some time. There isn’t the demand for our music that there was in the past, especially not outside of Britain so it seems after this year it’s an appropriate time to take a break, a ‘hiatus’ or whatever you want to call it.
The band’s remaining tour dates are as follows:
23 Apr – The Roadmenders, Northampton
24 Apr – The Brickyard, Carlisle
26 Apr – O2 Academy, Newcastle
28 Apr – The Stiff Kitten, Belfast
29 Apr – Academy 2, Dublin
30 Apr – O2 ABC, Glasgow
1 May – Velocity, Dunfermline
In other Idlewild related news, a new compilation, entitled The Collection, is out on Monday, featuring tracks selected by the band, and a song-by-song commentary by Roddy Woomble in the liner notes. Guitarist Rod Jones also releases his excellent solo debut, A Sentimental Education, on the same day.
Update:
Bassist Gareth Russell has posted the following note on the band’s Facebook page:
So there’s been a bit of speculation flying about regarding Roddy’s latest tour diary. The current situation is that we’re working on our plans for the rest of the year, when these become more definite we’ll be announcing them. What’s certain is that there will be no more UK tours in support of Post Electric Blues and there’ll be a significant break/hiatus/rest before we’ll begin writing another Idlewild record.
Rest easy, fans, rest easy. A break-up does not appear to be on the cards.
