The Unkindness of Ravens – ‘Dead Air’

‘Dead Air’ is the first single of five to be released on a monthly basis from underground electro duo The Unkindness of Ravens. Built on a pulsing electronic beat that sounds like someone striking a hammer across sheet metal directly above your head, it’s definitely not supposed to be soft and cuddly.

The pair’s punk influence is obvious here, with a razor-sharp guitar riff which is similar in sound (but not style) to that of hardcore punk groups like Minor Threat. It sounds like a harbinger of an oncoming thunderstorm, brilliantly reinforcing the menace of the beat as Nina Wagner’s haunting vocals strain under the weight of unreleased tension.

It’s a fairly good single: brooding, ominous and addictive. The drawback however, is that one good idea here isn’t enough to make a great song. It does almost sound like it could be a single by The Prodigy, but at the same time it’s guaranteed that they would want to shake things up more than this.

Our Arbitrary Numerical Verdict:
 ★★★☆☆
